Mapping Sevilla Negra, Visibilising historical remains of slavery
The work of the association 'Sevilla Negra’ renders visible the history of slavery in Sevilla through guided walks. The association started as an activist platform to give homage to the history and heritage of racialized communities and/or of African descent in the city. They tackle topics that go from the invisibilisation of violence in the colonial history of the city, to issues that undocumented individuals face in the present day. In this context, they started the walks as a way to share their ancestors’ and own stories with a wider audience. At the moment, it is the only organisation dealing critically with the colonial heritage of the city, building upon the work of scarce but thorough researchers. This map was designed as a physical object to record the information provided in the narrative walks of ‘Sevilla Negra’. It serves as a graphical support for the walks as well as for awareness-raising workshops on racism that the organization leads in high schools and youth centres.
