Engaging Architecture
The fundamental definition of architecture is the human need to find shelter and protection. But how do we move from the outside to the inside? How do we look from the inside to the outside? How do we open up our private space to the public, or, on the other hand, protect it from public view? What does this mean in terms of crossing the threshold, moving through the space and making the most of natural light? Once these choices have been made, how are they expressed architecturally? How do these choices shape the building’s architectural composition and the organisation of its front elevation? Its rhythm, its articulation, its materiality? Ultimately, what does this way of opening up reveal about the intentions of those who shape the environments in which we live?
Openings, windows, doors… Each of these elements reflects a socially conscious approach to architecture, attuned to the climate and societal challenges that are reshaping the way we live today. The elements of everyday life, which are often looked at without really being seen, encapsulate the essence of an architectural project: its relationship with the landscape, the way light is handled, and the shifting boundary between private and shared space. Whether they are technical features or minimal interventions, these elements become a genuine medium of expression for architects.
Through a selection of fourteen significant projects, designed in French-speaking Belgium between 2023 and 2026 and featured in the publication Inventaires#5, the exhibition showcases architecture that goes beyond simply creating forms. It addresses the pressing issues of our time: material circularity, restraint, the wellbeing of residents, and the place of every individual within the shared space.
The exhibition begins at the entrance to Le Delta with the installation of Caban’o, a collective, community-led and circular cabin-building project. It then unfolds on the top floor of Le Delta in four movements: opening up, creating thresholds, guided by light, and exploring the relationship between ethics and aesthetics. Scale models, photographs, illustrations, videos and construction details make up a 26-metre-long linear landscape that interacts with the room: it frames views of Namur and turns an empty space into a green patio. Through its scale, modularity and play of transparency, it offers a sensory experience that lets visitors see and understand the positions these architects are taking today.
Running through the exhibition is one key question: how can architecture help to shape society?
