Open Call for transdisciplinary contributions | Temps d'Archi #11
As part of its eleventh Temps d’Archi, The Institut Culturel d’Architecture Wallonie-Bruxelles (ICA), in collaboration with Mundaneum and The Centre d’Innovation et de Design au Grand-Hornu (CID), are launching a joint call for contributions open to architects working in pairs with another discipline (design, literature, landscape, philosophy, plastic arts, agronomy, music, dance, etc.) on the basis of this question: What is the state of urban utopias today?
The ideological and architectural research undertaken at the beginning of the 20th century around the concept of the Cité Mondiale imagined by Paul Otlet was the starting point for this joint appeal. This project reflects an optimistic and positivist vision of the future of society. His conception of the utopian city goes far beyond traditional geographical boundaries. Rather than being defined by physical borders, the city is conceived as a fluid and connected space, where interactions and exchanges transcend national and cultural barriers.
Today, the city is as much a question as a solution. A place of encounters, conflicts and civilisation, it crystallises responses to ecological, economic and social challenges. At a time when many issues, such as global warming, demographic flows, limited resources and pandemics, are threatening the well-being of urban dwellers, the city is becoming a place of experimentation. It is transforming, mutating and reinventing itself... So what utopian visions can we have for the city today?
