Bornival School
Programme
Nursery and primary classrooms, psychomotor room, meeting space, sanitary block and corridors.
Schools are among the most critical architectural projects as they form the learning environment for future generations. This makes it crucial for both client and architect to fulfill their responsibilities. In rural areas, renovating schools can revitalize often neglected communities and foster social connections among students, teachers, parents, and other villagers. The design team for the Bornival village primary school expansion took their responsibility seriously. They addressed the need for additional classroom space through a comprehensive evaluation of the entire school, enhancing its sustainability, circulation, fluidity, and general atmosphere. They created opportunities for interaction by designing strategically located, spacious circulation areas and incorporating elements of nature into the open-air playground and classrooms that overlook the fields. In addition to the economy of means used to create a timeless atmosphere through the use of simple details and materials, including the prominent use of terracotta, the greatest success of the project lies in the transition from the road to the new classrooms, which all face onto the surrounding landscape. The design of internal and external spaces with varying atmospheres offers endless possibilities for the imagination of pupils and teachers. This project shows great respect for children, treating them as equals to adults, and for the village, for the rural landscape, and for nature.
